Standard Bank Young Artists 2012

The 2012 Standard Bank Young Artist Award winners were announced in Johannesburg last night, hosted by Standard Bank. All the winners said that they are honoured to follow in the footsteps of the past winners of this prestigious award.

“The Standard Bank Young Artist Award continues to remain South Africa's most heralded accolade,” said National Arts Festival Director, Ismail Mahomed. “Bestowed to recognize and award excellence in the arts, the Award over the past 28 years has given added impetus to the careers and artistic voices of artists who have made strong impressionable footprints in both the South African and the international arena,” he added.

Bailey Snyman for Dance

Forth coming exhibition

Candice Breitz: Extra! from 8 February to 5 April

Michael MacGarry Candice Breitz: Extra! runs at the Standard Bank Gallery in partnership with the Goethe-Institut and Goodman Gallery from 8 February until 5 April, 2012. Breitz is an internationally renowned artist who has exhibited her photographs and video installations worldwide.

Breitz’s exhibition derives its title from her new work Extra (2011), a single-channel video and series of photographs created on the set of the popular local soap opera, Generations. Breitz inserts herself into a number of actual scenes from the soap, sometimes subtly, sometimes awkwardly and absurdly, but always without judgement or easy explanation.
